According to research carried out by Dimension Data titled "Digital Workplace Report: Transforming your business" artificial intelligence is still in its infancy, but it is already having a huge impact in driving transformation in many organisations. The report was carried out in 5 continents across 15 countries and surveyed 800 organisations. The big takeaway from this report is that many organisations are now moving to digital and virtual workplaces, with this trend expected to increase in the coming years.

The primary drivers

Enterprises believe that adaptation of new workstyle strategies is beneficial to their businesses. Thus they aim to have a flexible workforce which will use its time productively and enhance collaboration among themselves. In addition, it will lead to a satisfied workforce that will most likely stay with the company for a longer period.

By helping people work better, enterprises increase their efficiency. Therefore, instead of focusing on reducing costs, enterprises now implement changes in workstyles to enhance productivity and greater flexibility. For example, enterprises may adopt artificial intelligence to automate mundane tasks, which leaves employees flexible enough to perform other complex tasks that require imagination and innovation.

Barriers to successful implementation of new workstyles

IT issues are the leading barrier when it comes to implementation of new workstyles. This is because of the complex nature of the existing IT infrastructure which can act as a major hurdle when implementing tools to boost flexibility. Other barriers may arise from corporate culture which can inhibit changes in new workstyles. However, since there have been positive results, performance and customer satisfaction after implementation of new workstyles, IT ought to work closely with line of business heads to overcome some of these barriers.
